Santa Monica Women Take Down Tempe

Santa Monica Women 15 – 10 Tempe

The Santa Monica Women took the pitch this past Saturday on Club Day and came away with a victory over the (formerly) undefeated Tempe women, 15-10.

Santa Monica struck quickly in the first half, showcasing their tenacious defense and forcing a turnover that led to a try scored by utility back-turned-eight Lucy Tin. The consistent boot of Jacki Bercovici knocked in the conversion, putting the ‘Phins up 7-0. The remainder of the first half was a back and forth battle, with the ‘Phins being stopped just shy of the try line several times. Bercovici ended the half with a penalty kick, bringing the score to 10-0.

Tempe came out strong in the second half, putting pressure on the ‘Phins and breaking through the defensive line twice to score two tries, evening up the score to 10-10. Santa Monica continued to have great runs but could not get over the try line. With two minutes remaining, the ‘Phins did what they do best – got the ball to the outside to the wing, with the game-winning try scored by Liz Lanzarone. The whistle blew with a final score of 15-10.

This brings the regular season record to 5-1 for both Santa Monica and Tempe. Currently, Santa Monica is seeded second based on points. Playoffs will be held on April 26th and hosted by Santa Monica at Webster Middle School.
