SMRC U19 Boys Win Again
(Feb 6) - Though rainy weather closed their home field and forced a venue change to Camarillo, the Santa Monica Dolphins nevertheless were victorious in their league rugby match against ORCA, defeating the Channel Islands team 17-5.
The Dolphins were on the board early with five points from a nifty try by captain Nadav Djiji. Alonso Ordaz made the conversion and added a penalty kick later in the first half to put the Dolphins up 10-0 at halftime. Flanker Sean McKenna added a second-half try (also converted by Ordaz) but wet conditions slowed down the pace of the game. A slippery ball, combined with a solid ORCA defense, prevented the Dolphins from opening up their lead. ORCA scored a try with five minutes to go but it was too little, too late. The victory puts Santa Monica at the top of the SCYR North division.
The Santa Monica U16 boys also triumphed over ORCA, 27-15, giving them a win in their first league match of the season. The Dolphins scored five tries (giving them a bonus point), including two by winger Chris “Kentucky” Collins. Also scoring were lock Breandan Molloy, wing Conor Doherty, and prop Charlie Nelson. Captain Danny Thomas put 2 points on the board by converting Molloy’s try.
The Boys U14 & U12 and Girls U16 matches were rained out. There’s no local rugby for the holiday weekend. The U19, U16, U14, & U12 boys all play league matches vs Santa Clarita on Feb 20th.
