Dolphins March On

smrc-v-bb-20130202-2The Dolphins swept Back Bay at home Saturday, in a pair of games, to stay just behind league leaders Belmont Shore in the standings. Back Bay forfeited their third side commitment, which was a bit of a blessing in disguise, as the club was missing more than 20 players to injury and other commitments.

The Barracuda scored 20 points including tries by coach Robert Kremer and SMRC Hall of Famer Aaron Blatt. Steve Johnson and Matt Strangeway also made appearances for the ‘Cudda who sealed the win with three second half tries.

The Dolphins took the field and started slow for the second week in a row. Prop Jon Flake, making his first Dolphin start, got the scoring started when he took a ball on the wing in the 13th minute after sustained pressure on the Back Bay line. The visitors answered four minutes later, pouncing on a loose ball in the try zone.

Prop Epi Kalemani scored the first of his two tries in the 24th minute. Kalemani picked up a ball from the base of a ruck and then flopped over for the easy try. The Sharks again answered quickly, again from a dirty Dolphin ball deep in their own end. Then just before halftime, scrum half Pierce Cooley hit pay dirt. A Dolphin scrum deep in Back Bay territory set the platform for the Cooley score, as he picked up from the base of the scrum, ran left and ran over the only defender brave enough to get in his way. Halftime score: 19-14.

The second half saw more running rugby from the home team, and flanker George Davey opened the scoring after a multiphase possession that ended with him running in untouched. Just after the 3/4 mark in the game saw the try of the game. After another poached Shark line out the ball swung wide to the left and then back to the right. Flyhalf Michael Hobbs got the field near the center of the field and threw a 30 meter pass to a streaking Kalemani, who shrugged off the cover defense and danced into the try zone.

With 10 minutes left in the game the Sharks showed that they were not done as they scored a well earned try. But it was the Dolphins who closed the scoring as Hobbs juked and jived his way into pay dirt.
