Youth Report

The SMRC Youth Program is firing on all cylinders!  Younger age-grades (U8/U10/U12) are near the end of their season.  All three squads (five teams) this weekend at the annual Sharkfest in Back Bay, then will be at home for Club Day on 3/16.  U12 will participate in the SCYR North Conference Championship, to be held at Webster on Saturday, March 23rd.

For the older grades, the U14 & U16 girls are playing rugby nearly every weekend, as far away as to Fallbrook, where they played the National Champions a couple of weeks ago.  The number of girls participating seems to grow every week and that bodes well for the future of women’s rugby at Santa Monica.

The U14, U16, & U18 Boys are just entering the middle of their competitive season. Weekends have been filled with friendly matches (versus teams in other conferences) and all three age-grades are undefeated.  The U18s were victorious 48-14 last weekend over Belmont Shore, a team comprised mainly of the Wilson High School HS league champs.  Both they and the U16s are 2-0 in their respective standings and head to Palos Verdes tomorrow for the third round of league play.  U14 Boys completed the sweep over Belmont Shore last weekend, 45-5.  They have a bye this weekend (but are playing a friendly vs. Fullerton, 1:30pm at Webster) before heading into their last four league matches.

Make an effort to watch some of the great action on Club Day — you’ll be impressed by the speed and skill with which our Youth teams are playing rugby.
