U18 Boys Remain Undefeated
Upcoming Tour to Montana, April 24-25, for HS Invitational Tournament
The U18 boys rugby team have won 5 straight to remain undefeated in this season. The boys play in Division 2 in Southern California club rugby league, winning over Hawaiian Gardens, Rancho Cucamonga Rebels, and Try Time San Diego, as well as defeating the D2 sides from North County San Diego Thunder Rugby and South OC Raptors.
Both the U18 and U16 boys will host OMBAC at Lincoln Middle School in Santa Monica this Saturday, April 18, starting at 10 a.m.
Following that fixture, the squad travels to the Montana Invitational High School Rugby Tournament in Bozeman, April 24-26, where they’ll meet teams from all over the West.
Returning home, the boys will look ahead to SoCal Playoffs on May 2 and May 9.
HS head coach and SMRC Old Boy John Ruud leads a veritable who’s who of Santa Monica legends coaching the U18s and U16s, including Diane Watanabe, Danny Beattie, Brad Palmer, Brian O’Rourke and Diane Watanabe, among others.
The boys club team has had a big lift this season with players coming off school seasons at Loyola and Mira Costa, and excitement is building for SoCal playoffs. Santa Monica legends Andrew Hunter and Mitch Gordon have long been involved at Mira Costa, and Brian and Beth O’Rourke were critical in getting rugby re-started at Loyola while their son Ronan was there. As with the women’s team and ICEF, the pipeline from school programs to club rugby is really having a HUGE impact at all levels of the Club.
