Dolphins Take Plate at San Luis Obiso Rugby “Tri-Tip” Sevens

San Luis Obispo Rugby

A strong contingent of Dolphin regulars, led by captain Ken Aseme, won their 3rd Plate victory of the summer campaign last weekend in San Luis Obispo. Groggy legs from pre-dawn rising, the long drive, and an early start time on the schedule produced a narrow loss to a surprisingly sprightly Eagle Rock in the 9 am opener. The sting of defeat ignited a 5-game fury on the remaining helpless (and often hapless) victims, including Fresno, Marin County, Kern County, South Valley, and some old guys from San Antonio who were pretty much there to escape Texas heat. Crunching defense up front from vets Taylor Manavian, Pat King, Zac Winters, and Matthew Strangeway set the platform for Brian O’Shea, Mike LaVerne, and Kelly Serfoss to unleash tournament high scorers Shane Morales and Dave Martini. Danny Carpio acquitted himself quite well through consistent ball service in spite of a beard that has landed him on TSA’s no-fly list. Cameos from Cris “Big Twin” Erdtsieck and Zac Schwartz filled out the line-up and frequently lit the scoreboard as well. While the team was disappointed to have been barred from Cup competition by the early foible, team cohesion was well-rewarded with a healthy serving of the tournament’s namesake tri-tip and luxury spa accommodations at the Vagabond Inn. Said captain Kenny, “The boys played well, but I still don’t know which twin was there.” Sure Ken, whatever you say. Here’s your special water bottle.
