Santa Monica Women Finish League Play Undefeated

This past weekend, the women’s rugby team defeated Temecula 42-0 to conclude their regular league season undefeated. Capitalizing on their experience in the Champagne Classic the week before (where they came out as winners of Chablis Cup with wins over both the San Diego and Berkeley B-sides), the Lady ‘Phins were able to use their speed and power for the win.

The game against Temecula featured fantastic team play, as they were able to use their entire backline to get the ball out, with great support from the forwards at the breakdowns. Winger and Back of the Match Alex “Savage” Cimaglia made impressive tackles and had strong runs throughout the game, as did back Hannah “Miley” Greene, who twinkle toed her way to two tries in the match and kicked one conversion. As always, April Rodriguez (playing as the 8-man) was a beast and used her amazing agility to score three tries in the match. Lock Anita Bradbury added to the forward try tally with two of her own in the second half (while flicking off defenders with a stiff arm), and center Kate Pokorna notched a try as well. Forward of the match went to prop Erica Sin.

The team now has a weekend off before a friendly against Belmont on Club Day, March 24. This will serve as preparation for league playoffs, which will be held in Las Vegas on March 31. The ladies hope to take the title once again and clinch a bid to the National Championships in November.
