Santa Monica Womens Rugby Stay Unbeaten

On a beautiful Saturday in Ventura, CA, the Lady ‘Phins traveled to battle the Ventura Outlaws. Despite a messy game, Santa Monica Womens Rugby came out on top with another shutout, defeating the Outlaws 25-0. The first half featured another stellar performance for Man of the Match April Rodriguez, who scored 2 tries with her magical ability to truck through tackles and attempts to stop her runs. Fullback Hannah “Miley” Greene made an impressive run, and added yet another try to her name this season. Hooker turned prop Christina DerHagopian notched a try as well, taking the ball up the weak side off a ruck and barreling through the Ventura defense. The ‘Phins closed the half with a score of 20-0.

The second half brought many substitutions. Ventura was able to break through the line a couple times, but a tough defensive stance by the Lady ‘Phins kept them from scoring. Rookie Alex “Savage” Cimaglia scored the lone try of the second half. At the final whistle, Santa Monica won 25-0.

Back of the Match went to Nina Crane, who played a great match at center with strong runs and great hands. Honorable forwards mentions went to Christina DerHagopian and rookie Emmy Vargas, who laid a Ventura player out in her first rugby match ever. Honorable backs mentions went to flyhalf Whitney Vance and Hannah Greene.

This weekend, SMRC Women will be participating in the Champagne Classic tournament in San Diego, where they will have the opportunity to play against some of the best teams on the west coast. It promises to be a great chance to play with stiff competition in preparation for playoffs at the end of March.
