Barracuda Charge to Victory

Santa Monica Division 1 Barracuda played a social scrimmage against Olympic Club’s second side late Saturday. With limited light and time the game was reduced to two 30 minute halves.

However, the Barracuda squad played highly competitive rugby, working hard for the full game. Many opportunities were taken and resulted in tries, but there were also some great runs that strong O Club defense stalled. The Barracuda in turn played front foot defense, hitting up the O Club line as a unit and controlling the pace of the game.

Five minutes in Santa Monica got on the score board with a try by halfback Danny Carpio. Tyler Pritchard took and made the conversion.

O Club were quick to reply, scoring an unconverted try two minutes later.

Quick hands and strong decision making by the backline lead to winger Badra Wilson getting in for 5 points late in the half. Again, Tyler Pritchard stepped up and made the conversion.

At the half, Santa Monica lead 14 – 5.

Early in the second half fly half Pierce Cooley showed strong judgement when slotting a deep drop kick from mid field.

SMRC war horse center Matthew Strangeway displayed great strength and barged over the try line 8 minutes later for another 5. Shawn Lee, taking over kicking duties in the second half, made the conversion.

Closing out the scoring for the day was the replacement half back Lucas Yancey. Some fancy footwork getting him over the line. Again Shawn Lee made the conversion.

The final score: SMRC 31 – O Club 5
