Women sink Belmont!

For the first time in club history, the Santa Monica Women claimed victory over Belmont Shore, 15-7.

The Lady Phins struck quickly, garnering a try by fullback Becky “Bunz” Hearn within the first 2 minutes of the game. A conversion by Jacki Bercovici put Santa Monica up 7-0 early on.  Belmont tried to regroup defensively, but the speed of Santa Monica’s backline proved too much for them to handle as wing Lucy Tin burned their defensive line around the outside for the second try, bringing the score to 12-0.
After halftime, Belmont capitalized on their size advantage and a couple missed tackles to score a try and conversion, narrowing the lead to 12-7 at about 10 minutes into the half. The remainder of the second half turned into a defensive battle and included a beautiful dummy and stutter step by captain Whitney Vance, which set up a penalty right in front of the posts. The reliable boot of Bercovici added another 3 points here and secured the victory with a final score of 15-7.
This division is turning into a heated battle for the top seed going into playoffs, and the Lady Phins remain confident and optimistic that this team can take this all the way to Nationals.

The final 3 games of the season will be played at home. The next game is Saturday, March 22nd against the San Diego Surfer
